Security forces and law enforcement agencies killed 22 terrorists during a joint intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Khyber district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on April 21, according to the military’s media wing.

In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the operation targeted militants belonging to the banned group referred to as Fitna al Khawarij, which authorities link to the proscribed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The forces engaged the militants in an intense exchange of fire, during which all 22 terrorists were neutralised.

The ISPR stated that the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire during the operation, resulting in the martyrdom of a 10-year-old child who was caught in the crossfire. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the slain militants, who were reportedly involved in multiple terrorist activities in the region.

Following the operation, security forces launched a sanitisation campaign to clear any remaining militant presence in the area. Officials reiterated that counter-terrorism operations under the national strategy “Azm-e-Istehkam” will continue across the country with full intensity. The initiative, approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan in June 2024, aims to eliminate terrorism and extremism in a comprehensive and decisive manner.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the security forces for the successful operation. In separate statements, both leaders expressed deep sorrow over the death of the child, describing it as a tragic consequence of terrorist actions.

The President reaffirmed that Pakistan remains committed to regional peace while continuing efforts to counter terrorism. He said such incidents strengthen the resolve of the nation to eliminate militancy and ensure long-term stability.

The Prime Minister also commended the security forces’ professionalism and reiterated the government’s resolve to continue operations until terrorism is fully eradicated from the country.
